Oddly when the Lord Of The Rings by Tolkien got extremely attacked by some "Important" critics when it came out in the fifties.

As non-intellectual, too escapist, and generally a threat to Catcher in the Rye and Lord of the Flies.  A book that had unfortunately reached a cult status which went against the grain of the modern world.

An over blown fairy tale lacking meaning, even a danger!!!
