That is very important to get past misinformation and lack of knowledge.
Somethings poetry is not:
It is not philosophical
It is not intellectualism
It is not writing your diary down
It is not unreasonable
It is not to demonstrate you have feelings
It is not done in contest or competition
It does not require classroom instruction
It is not to prove how deep you are
It is not shameful
Poetry is
Not easy to do or get good at
General knowledge of the Greeks, especially Homer is important
Also reading Shakespeare, Poe, Rosseti, Bishop, Tennyson, Blake, Cohen is recommended
Study of structure and meter through practice is important
Expect at least a year before you are doing well
Tedious perfection is not reccomended
A poem can be as great as a painting
Many times just enjoy the act of creating
Have at least some kind of audience
Go wild and let yourself go sometimes
Rather than judge your work learn about revision and deletion, especially deletion
