The narrative is based on moments of climax where interest in the outcomes is high, and that is created by a build up, and the tension it causes.
In my case these elements are indeed lacking. I would argue though that the point of attack for a writer is sometimes not clever enough. How to condense this with out losing the reader is a real trick. The trick might be solved by simply blurring the convention of realism for the sake of drama, rather then other elements. I believe that for that to happen the characters have to be given extra treatment. Magical realism is great for making the hero travel a bit faster, but dream like qualities are not as rejected as easy as obvious. If the leaps are imaginative enough than who cares?
