Central Moment In American History

Wednesday in the library, at approximately 12:30 PM, a hateful and racist message that contained threatening language towards African-Americans, including references to lynching and mentions of the KKK, was discovered on one of the library computers. Students reacted by marching out of class to protest the message and invoked the call of 'Black Lives Matter' .
"Two things have to happen. One, the person who did this has to be brought to justice because there's no we we can feel safe as a student body if that doesn't happen. The second thing is that these people, the black students at Berkeley High need to heal," said Alecia Harger, a UC Berkeley sophomore.

School administration responded to the message by urging students, staff, parents and guardians to contact the school if they had any information on the matter.
Mark Colpan, a school district spokesman, said "no one" was not aghast at the message, adding that the district was "outraged" and "disgusted" by what was written.
Berkeley Police Department and the school district is investigating the incident as a hate crime. The school’s principal Sam Pasarow sent out a message Thursday morning regarding the incident.
“We are working hard to create a positive and inclusive school culture and we recognize the deep pain and rage that hate crimes such as this one bring to our students of color, as well as the damaging effects on our entire community,” Pasarow wrote in a statement.
This is the third high-profile, racially inflammatory incident at the school within the last year.
